Spatial Justice in Polar Regions

Download Full PDF

In this paper, we examine Ed Soja’s theory of spatial justice as applied to northern territories. The core thesis is that geographic remoteness should not lead to the deprivation of civil rights.

Key Aspects of the Study

  • Infrastructure Censorship: How a lack of communication or roads becomes a form of political exclusion.
  • Resource Rent: Indigenous rights to participate in the distribution of profits from resource extraction.
  • Polar Urbanism: Models of a just city beyond the Arctic Circle.

The researchers conclude that the ‘Right to the North’ is not only the right to reside, but the right to shape the future of this territory, independent of external metropolises.
